Even the best idea won’t get you far if you fail to communicate it visually

«Design for start-ups – You may have wondered if the topic of this workshop is really as important that it can occupy an entire evening? We say yes. Because start-ups often focus solely on their solution. But even the best idea won’t get you far if you fail to communicate it visually. Conversely, this doesn’t mean that good design can make up for poor content.» With a background in branding, Olivier Weiss speaks from experience. At our esteemed partner Postfinance, he is Innovation Manager and regularly deals with start-ups. «When questions about design arise, reactions like ‘I don’t know anything about design’ are common.

‘I’m not a designer, let’s outsource this.’

But then they are surprised at the costs involved.» Olivier likes to encourage STAGE UP participants to pay enough attention to design aspects and to take them into their own hands. In the first exercise, workshop participants are asked to break down their idea based on the Golden Circle by Simon Sinek. «The Golden Circle helps you to define your value proposition», explains Olivier.

In the second part of the workshop, all essential design elements are worked out step by step – everything should be chosen consciously and nothing left to chance: Layout, Color, Typography, Images. Olivier advises: «It’s worth taking some time here. Once you have defined the elements, you can use them for many years.»

At the end of the workshop, Olivier shares his favorite tools and apps: Within minutes, a logo can be created, a presentation enhanced or an image professionally edited. «Dare to design your start-up yourself!» He encourages.
